Abuse

Abuse comes in many forms — physical, verbal, sexual, emotional, and financial. Financial abuse is when someone controls your ability to access and manage your own money as a way of holding power over you. It can look like controlling your spending, restricting access to cash or assets, or manipulating your finances. It's a pattern of behaviour that can leave you feeling isolated, trapped, and lacking confidence.

Financial abuse can happen to anyone, at any age, and in any kind of relationship — whether that's with a partner, ex-partner, family member, friend, or carer.

Getting help

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, the organisations below can help.

If you or anyone around you is in immediate danger, call the police on 999. If you can't speak safely, dial 999 and then press '55' after the call is answered — this tells the operator you need help and your call will be transferred to the police.
