Questions, frequently asked

What is Plum?

Plum is your personal, and rather intelligent, savings assistant. It monitors your spending and helps you save money effortlessly. Some say that Plum is a girl, some say it's a boy. All we know is that it lives amongst your friends on Facebook Messenger and you can use it on your iPhone, Android or Windows Phone.

How does Plum work?

In a few steps:

  • You grant Plum read-only access to your transaction data by linking your bank account. To access your data we have partnered with Yodlee, a world leader in providing secure financial services to banks and other financial institutions.
  • Plum will then analyse thousands of transactions and identify your regular income, rent, bills and daily spend. We call this your "unique saver profile".
  • Using this profile and other factors like your available balance and Jon Snow's magic hair, our smart algorithm will run every few days and calculate the right amount to save for you. This amount will be automatically transferred into your own Plum savings account via a Direct Debit instruction (covered by the Direct Debit guarantee). Every Plum user gets their own savings account when they first sign up.
  • Plum will message you to keep you informed on your progress and give you tips and tricks on how to make the most of your money. Your savings are accessible 24/7.

How is it different than a regular standing order?

A regular standing order assumes that you spend the same each month. It also requires you to calculate the amount yourself or pick an arbitrary amount based on your gut feel. On the other hand, Plum will crunch all the numbers for you and adapt to your lifestyle. This means that, throughout the month, it will detect if you are spending less or more than usual and save more or less respectively.

What are your security practices?

We are security freaks ourselves, so security tops our list of priorities, along with building a product that our users will love. We undertake the following steps to protect your data:

  • We never store (or have access to) your bank login details
  • We use symmetric cryptography (AES) to store any sensitive data
  • We use 256-bit TLS encryption to communicate between the browser and our servers

If you want to learn more about our approach to security and privacy feel free to contact us at security@withplum.com.

Can you guarantee that you will not overdraft my bank account?

Yes, our algorithm includes a number of safeguards specifically for this. Having said that, we cannot predict and prevent your future impulse purchases – for now at least! If you feel it was our fault let us know at help@withplum.com and we'll happily cover the overdraft fees. We know, we hate fees as well.

Where are my savings held?

Your savings are deposited in your own wallet operated by MangoPay SA, an EU regulated and licenced financial institution, and held at Barclays Plc. Your savings are yours, and yours alone; we cannot use any of it for our own operations and if we go out of business it will be returned to you.

Which banks does Plum work with?

Plum is only available in the UK and currently works with NatWest, RBS, Santander, HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, Metro Bank, First Direct, Halifax, Citibank, Nationwide, TSB, Bank of Scotland and the Co-Operative Bank. If your bank is not supported you can tell us here.

What happens if I do most of my spending on a credit card?

That's no problem as long as you pay your credit card from the account you have linked to Plum. The only caveat is that because we will only see big sums as expenses (your credit card payments) our algorithm will be a bit more static than if you used a debit card.

How can I make a withdrawal from my savings?

You can use the `Withdraw` command on Messenger. The money will then be deposited in the account you have linked to Plum within 24 hours, free of charge of course.

Can I invite my friends?

Most definitely! When you sign up you get your own personal invite code which you can use to invite your friends. To see your code, tap `Invite friends` in the Messenger menu.

How do I get in touch with you?

You can tap `Help` in the Messenger menu and then use the `Talk to a human` command. Alternatively, you can email us at help@withplum.com. If you just want to say hello, drop us a line at hello@withplum.com.
